Today is further testament to the close and warm relations shared between the Government of Tonga and the Government of Australia.

The exchange of letters signed by Hon Tevita Lavemaau, the Minister for Finance and His Excellency Adrian Morrison the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga will enable Australia to release additional budget support, tagged to specific thematic areas. This support is to strengthen economic resilience due to the decametric affects COVID-19 has, not only on the international stage, but within the local setting as well.

  • AUD$2m is tagged to support the Social and Economic Stimulus Social Protection Payments: To poor households, elderly and disabled, to expand social care takers services and community Policing.
  • AUD$5m is earmarked to support Tonga’s COVID-19 Business Recovery Program that have been affected by the fall of the global pandemic.

Both representatives were happy of the mutual support shown, in order to further facilitate the release of these funds, to support Tonga’s 3rd round of Economic Stimulus Package of Phase 1. It is especially welcoming to know that this support will reach the most vulnerable groups in the country leaving no one behind, especially during these very fragile times.
